Runes of Magic PvP: Surviving the Twinks
Jun 7, 2010PC Gaming
So I've been playing this free MMORPG lately called Runes of Magic (RoM). I'm going to assume you already know about it if you're reading this post. If not, it's similar to WoW and is free, so why not give it a try? As with most MMORPG's, there are PvE and PvP servers. This post is designed to give you some advice and ideas for surviving on the PvP servers, since things are a lot tougher than you may be used to on other MMORPG PvP servers.

Just Cause 2: A PC Gamer's Guilty Pleasure
May 7, 2010PC Gaming
I am a die-hard PC gamer and love FPS and RTS games, and I am confident that those types of games are done best on PC. Naturally, I cringe at the idea of cross-platform games and ports, especially shooters of any kind. The porting process inevitably results in bugs, poor gameplay dynamics, goofy controller-centric menu systems, and poor visuals. Games that are designed for console simply don't translate well over to PC, as they were designed for the console's controller and limited console performance and resources. That being said, there is one game that I have had so much fun playing that I've managed to forget these issues, momentarily. That game is Just Cause 2.

The Most Annoying Things about Facebook Games
Apr 16, 2010Web and InternetComments (1)
Micro-Transactions
In an effort to monetize Facebook games beyond advertisements, most all big games offer some way to pay real money to gain in-game currency or items. The annoying part is that many games, including FarmVille (the most popular Facebook game with over 80 million active users), make it nearly impossible to get a lot of the game content without resorting to real money.

Google AdWords: Is Your Ad Stuck In Under Review?
Mar 10, 2010Web and InternetComments (1)
Has the status of one of your Google AdWords ads been "Under Review" for more than a few days? Google states that they review ads in the order they're received, and work to review ads as quickly as possible. However, if your ad has been Under Review for a long period of time, it may be bugged or stuck and may remain that way. This happened to one of my ads, which had been under review for almost 2 weeks. I tried editing it and recreating it, but it would continue to sit Under Review.

Unlocking Results: AMD Phenom II X2 555 & ASRock M3A785GXH/128M AM3
Mar 10, 2010Computer Hardware
As you are probably aware, there is quite a bit of hype surrounding AMD's current X2 and X3 processors. The idea is that many of them are perfectly functioning X4's that have had one or two cores disabled to meet X2 and X3 demand. Read this Anandtech post for more information on this and some better analysis.

How-to: Streaming MP3/Sound Length in Flash Actionscript 3
Feb 19, 2010Programming
While creating a dynamic music player for the web in flash (AC3) I ran across a bit of an issue. When attempting to get the length of a song using the .length function, flash only returns the length of what it has loaded so far. Until the sound is fully loaded, flash is unable to tell you the length in seconds of that sound file. I found a solution that works well and doesn't rely on the length being manually inputted or pulled from the ID3 tags.

How To Redirect Using PHP
Feb 19, 2010Programming
If you've been developing in ASP 3.0 (classic ASP) you may be used to calling the response.redirect() function whenever you need to redirect a user to a different page. You could call this function anywhere in the page, which was convenient. Now that you're using PHP, you may be a little confused about how to redirect. In PHP, you redirect using the header() function and it must be called before any HTML. Like so:

Design Your Website For AdBlock
Feb 5, 2010Web Development
Ad blockers are the most popular plugins for browsers these days. They come with comprehensive blacklists that will block most ads on the Internet right from the get-go. As a web developer, you can't prevent people from using an ad blocker, and it's probably a horrible idea to block access to your content if they do use an ad blocker. One thing you should do is make sure your site doesn't break or look ugly.

Far Cry 2 for PC Kind of Sucks
Oct 26, 2008PC GamingComments (2)
I bought this game on day one, based solely on pre-release media, hype, and its amazing predecessor. Unfortunately, the game feels as though it sold out to become just another buggy console port. Crytek had nothing to do with this sequel, and it shares nothing but name with its predecessor.
